We all know repetition is the key to memorize but without an engaging ESL game it is hard to keep student focused on vocabulary or sentence for a period of time. Besides, boring repetition causes students to lose interest in learning. So how to keep them engaged and interested in the lesson? Well, for this post Muxi ESL is going to help us with his ESL game called Puppet String, specifically for ESL kids from 2 to 12 years old.
Elicit the target language including any sentence, word, or phrase. Next, tie a puppet to a string (if you can’t find a string, get a shoelace) then hold it up and move it back and forth like a pendulum. Make sure the puppet is small and soft otherwise use any soft material like piece of cloth or a small towel
Have everyone including ESL kids and teachers chant the word or sentence together so that kids will listen and repeat over and over. This way, they’ll memorize better and be confident in order to say it out loud. Next, Ask the first kid in a row to pass through the moving puppet without being tagged by the it. Now ask the 2nd student then 3rd, and so on. Once they’re comfortable with it, ask a group of kids to follow the same process then involve the whole class.
Check the video below to see the ESL game in action.
If you want to challenge students and make it more engaging, let them know the game will have a winner. Divide the class into two teams. each team will pass through the puppet and the last student (who hasn’t been tagged yet) will be the winner.
When playing Puppet String ESL game, the teacher is focused on one student at a time so for large classes, it’s only possible if there are more puppets, string, and teachers to hold otherwise it mostly suits classes with less than 20 ESL kids. Having said that, the game goes quickly which gives more time to play different variations.
As we mentioned earlier this game suits young learners (ESL kids) and a fun game to play in your kindergarten classes for any topics and English level
Hope you like this engaging ESL game and thanks to Muxi ESL for sharing it with us. Make sure to check out his channel on YouTube with lots of fun games mostly for kids. Also let us know in comment below how students like Puppet String ESL game. Have Fun!
