Are you looking for a simple yet fun ESL game for shapes? here is “Touch Shape” for you. Teachers do not need to prepare anything but shape flashcards. If big and small is also part of the vocabulary bring different sizes of the same shape. This is a quick and easy flashcard game. However, if teachers use real 2d shapes, it will be more developmentally appropriate and of course ESL kids will engage more
Place the shapes on the floor and let students come closer, standing or sitting around the shapes. On the count of three everybody raises up their hand, getting ready to touch the ESL shape. The teacher now calls out the name of shape then students quickly put their hands on the shape. Do not forget to specify the size if that is the target language as well.
Teachers can play Touch Shape in different ways. Either the whole class or team up the students for competition. If there is enough time you can call students one by one and challenge them individually.
Use this ESL game for shapes as a time filler to not only have a fun and interesting class, also students review ESL shape vocabularies.
Kids under 12 definitely enjoy today’s ESL game for shapes. I personally haven’t tried this for older students but if anyone did let us know how students felt about it in the comment section.
Touch Shape is suitable for any number of students. For large classes (over 12 students) instead of circle let students stand around flashcards and when you call out any shape they look for that and try to touch it.
