When I came up with today’s ESL pronouns game, I never imagined how much laughter and fun it can bring just by teaching he and she. Students, especially kids and teenagers love it so much that don’t wanna stop playing. The good thing is teachers only need a blanket or board (both must be large enough to cover the student).
I’ve tried the game without explaining so it all comes as a surprise. If you’d like to give them a surprise too, ask students to close their eyes. Gently go to someone and bring them to the front and cover them with the blanket (or hide behind the board).
After our secret student is well hidden, let others open their eyes. start by saying “someone went missing” as you point to the empty chair with surprising emotion. Of course, they know who he or she is but continue by asking “Is he a boy or a girl/Is she a male or female?” or any similar question related to their gender. Encourage students to give full answers such as “Yes, he is a boy”. then ask something about the appearance such as “Is he tall?” And again another full answer, emphasizing specifically on pronouns.
Ask them to close their eyes again and bring another students as much as time allows
The number of questions that teachers can ask per student depends on how much time is left. But usually, two or three is the best in order for every student to try being a hidden one. Also, it is better to end the question by asking “Who is he/she”
This fun ESL pronoun game is suitable for small and large classes but keep in mind that half of the students might not get a chance of being hidden. We’d suggest playing this game if you are teaching 20 students or less
As soon as students are ready to learn “he and she“, teachers may try this super fun ESL pronouns game in their class regardless of the age.
