Like any other college activity, healthy ESL food cut out will clear up those old magazines in the school for the sake of learning food vocabulary in an amusing way for ESL kids. The good thing is no preparation is needed. Just get magazines to the class and it’s done
Friendly reminder: Please do not purchase a new magazine for food cut out Aand after the activity, please do not forget to recycle the rest of the papers for a better environment
For every two kids have either a magazine or just a few pages from food magazines. Now pair them up and give a pair of scissors to each group.
Next step, the teacher calls a vegetable or any other ESL food. For higher levels try to describe the food itself. For example “It’s yellow and round. We pick it from the ground”.
Now the kid without scissors looks for the matched picture. When the food is found, the other student cut it out and glue it on the paper. For the next round, they switch tasks
If you are wondering where to glue the ESL food picture then it’s up to you. One way is to glue it on paper plates and design a healthy plate full of healthy food such as a plate of salad. This way teachers have a chance to talk about food categories and what makes a dish healthy. Or just simply glue all the ESL food pictures onto a white paper and go on with the target language in your mind. It could be “What do you prefer salad or cake?”, “What’s your favorite vegetable”, “Do you want to eat a cucumber” or etc.
Cut out activities are always fun for ESL kids under 12 years old especially finding different types of foods from magazines. This activity helps their team-building skills as well. Keep in mind this is not a suitable activity for ESL kids under 3 years old since their motor skills for using scissors are not developed well
Doing any cut out including our healthy ESL food cut out activity requires lots of papers (or magazines) plus scissors. So usually these activities are not recommended for large classes as sometimes student’s safety can be a problem too. Have fun together in classes with 1 to 12 students and again recycle the remaining papers for the good of our planet
For fruit vocabulary, we have another game ready to learn and play. For that please check out Fruit Paint ESL color Game for kids
