Scanning is a popular ESL Reading activity that many professional teachers use to develop reading skills for teenagers and adults. We are going to explain what it is and how to play in your classroom
sometimes we need to find important details quickly. To do this, we scan the reading using our eyes to move quickly over the reading and look for specific things such as numbers (to find times, dates), capitalized initials (to find names and places) and etc.
To play, first, explain the above with a demonstration. Next, assign two students to scan a specific detail, and whoever got it first is the winner. Students can team up as well to play against each other which makes it even more fun.
As mentioned above, the class can be divided into teams which reduce the time to play the ESL reading activity and make this game suitable for large ESL classes
Students of all levels (beginners to advanced) are able to do the ESL reading activity but they must be at least 8 years old or above.
