For this version of ESL family tree, students must be notified in advance to bring photos of their family members. If you wanna see the teacher’s version please visit ESL family tree (for teachers)
Make sure before class you have a dialogue consisting of what you want to teach or review we’ll get to it in a while
Now go to any kid randomly and ask one of the questions in the dialogue you prepared. For example “who is this” and e courage the kid to answer “this is my dad” try to ask other questions with other kids until every question in the dialogue is asked or all the kids have answered at least a question.
As a follow up activity, bring two students and let them to have a conversation using the prepared dialogue. Questions about family are but not limited to “where is he from? Is she a boy or a girl? How old is your uncle? What’s your mother’s favorite food?
This game is suitable for ages above three years old even sometimes ESL adults like to talk about their family members and relatives. To make it more appropriate for each age it is important to bring in different questions to the dialogue.
For ESL Family Tree number of students doesn’t really matter it’s just matter of how to manage the activity according to the class. One suggestion is to pair up in case there is not enough time for everyone to come in front and have a conversation, or you can just proceed as much as time allows. Have fun!
